Hi! I know you want to know about our first week in Glasgow… so here goes nothing. First of all, introductions: my name is Nicolle Assumpção, and I am a Junior/Senior Theatre and Screen Arts student at Pepperdine. Side note: I am from Brazil, which means Scotland is “abroad squared” for me at this point. And I am loving it!
After spending a wonderful week in Glenelg, we finally arrived in Glasgow, surrounded by its beautiful historic buildings, and dove into daily rehearsals at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland. Although I loved the Highlands, I was excited to get to the city and immerse myself in the process of bringing this play to life.
I think the word of the week has been “explore” — both the city and our play. I’ve been loving Glasgow, and every day I take a different route to the RCS. The beautiful buildings and the area we’re staying in — Merchant City — are so lively, full of people, stores, restaurants, and so much more to discover.
This week I went on the City Chambers tour, and it was simply magical. I’m a history geek, so anything historical I can get my hands on, I’m down to explore. I also had a lovely walk along Glasgow Green and saw some beautiful architecture and green spaces. I’m planning to go back with a book so I can read and spend more time there.
The first week of rehearsals has been all about exploration too. We had another read-through with our wonderful playwright and got into the nitty-gritty of the text. This play is really complex, but everyone is doing their best with character work and piecing everything together so we can bring the audience at the Fringe something thought-provoking.
I play Ami, Quinn, and Sam. Ami is an AI who works on the pod to keep the residents calm and plan their routines. During this first week of rehearsals, I learned that Ami is the membrane holding the pioneers and the whole pod together — through her algorithm, she predicts the residents’ needs and tailors their routines accordingly.
Quinn works for Brin Corporation and seems to be heading the operation overseeing the pioneers’ situation. I’ve learned a few things about her, but I have a feeling this character could go in several different directions — there’s still a lot to explore. Sam, on the other hand, only appears in a TV snippet segment so far, but I sense there are more layers to uncover there too. One week in, and I already feel like Glasgow and this play are teaching me as much about myself as about Ami, Quinn, and Sam.
