Away to Scotland We Go – Blake Schalliol

Our Scotland Travel day started with us arriving on campus in Malibu the evening before our flights. We had a little welcome barbecue and hung out for a little while. Our bus left school at 2am the following morning, so we tried to get a tiny bit of sleep. In the morning, we were all ready to go and headed towards the buses at 1:45am. We loaded the buses and arrived at LAX around 2 am. After checking and getting through security, we all headed to the gate and waited for our flight. Some of us grabbed breakfast, and others slept.

We then got on our first plane out of two. This one took us to Toronto Airport. We had a 4-hour layover at that airport, so we grabbed some food and prepared for our second flight to Edinburgh. That flight was about 6.5 hours. We were all pretty tired after a full day of travel. Once we landed in Edinburgh, we got our stuff and headed outside.

Seeing the Scottish hills from the air was a sight to see; it really got me excited for the journey ahead. After landing in Scotland, we met our tour guides, Eddy and Camie, up in the Highlands at Glenelg. They were incredible guides who filled us in on so much history as we drove up to the Highlands, including Robert the Bruce, about whom Eddy gave us the entire story. They really helped us get into the culture of this country we will be staying in. The entire drive up to the Highlands blew me away.

The entire drive was filled with beauty and a whole bunch of history. Even though we were all pretty exhausted and most of us fell asleep on the bus, I tried my best to stay awake to take in the beautiful scenery. It truly has been such an amazing experience. A lot of us were dreading the long bus ride after two long plane flights, but it turned out to be one of the highlights so far.

Hands down, so far, the best part has been exploring Glenelg. On one of the days of travel, we went on a hike in the hills of Glenelg, where I loved experiencing the beauty of this country. Also, everyone has been so welcoming and lovely to be part of as a community. This has truly been an incredible experience, and surprisingly, not much jet lag for any of us. 100% one of the most beautiful countries I’ve been in.
