Over the last few weeks, we have spent all of our free time exploring the city and finding the best places in Glasgow! So, I’m gonna share some of mine today!
Botanical Gardens: I think that the Botanical Gardens are the most beautiful place in the city. Located in the West End the gardens are the perfect place to take a chill day off. When it finally gets warm in Glasgow the gardens are the perfect place to hang out, bask in the sun, or take a nap on the grass. The greenhouses are also wonderful places to explore exotic flora and fauna! We also had the opportunity to watch a fantastic production of The Duchess of Malfi at Bard in the Botanics, a theatre company that performs in the greenhouses. The show was fantastic and the work they do in such an interesting performance space is one to remember!
West End: Along with the beautiful Botanical Gardens, the West End of Glasgow has so much to offer! It is a mere 15 minute subway ride from the city centre and is a great place to walk around and spend the day! There are fantastic charity and thrift shops, great cafes and coffeehouses, and wonderful restaurants and pubs. The West End is also home to the University of Glasgow, providing the whole area with a bit of a University town feel. Other than the gardens, what sticks out to me the most in the West End is the Kelvinside Hillhead Parish Church, a ginormous rounded cathedral structure that makes you remember you’re in a city that was founded in the 6th century.
Maki & Ramen: This is my favorite Ramen spot that I have found in the city center so far! The staff was very friendly and both the sushi and ramen were fantastic! They also have a great lunch special that allows you to get an appetizer, ramen, and drink for only 15 pounds! If you are of age when visiting Glasgow they also have a house beer that is specifically paired with the ramen and is by far the best beer that I have had in Scotland so far. Overall, Maki and Ramen is a great place to grab a great lunch.
Leopardo Pizza: There was a day when I was craving Italian food and so I decided to stop by an interesting looking Italian restaurant with a silly name. I sat down and saw that they had pastas inside of bread bowls for only 10 pounds. I ordered it only because I thought it was funny and did not expect it to be good at all but, IT WAS FANTASTIC! Leopardo has convinced me that the pasta bread bowl may be the greatest thing ever invented and the ability to eat even your bowl is something that I find incredibly satisfying. Leopardo is great if you want a silly, but delicious bite!
Movie Theatres: Our time in Glasgow has coincided with some awesome movie releases including The Odyssey, The Invite, and Spiderman Brand New Day! And as theatre and movie nerds, you know we’ve been trying to see these films on the biggest screens possible. In the middle of downtown Glasgow there are two fantastic movie theaters that I couldn’t recommend more. The Omniplex is a giant 15 story building with multiple huge theatres and screens. Snacks are well priced and watching the Odyssey on their MAXX screen was a fantastic experience. If you are interested in older or indie film, just a few blocks from the Omniplex is the Glasgow Film Theatre. While we were there they had anniversary showings of Taxi Driver and All the President’s Men. These two places are great to check out!!
