Hello, my name is Jacqueline Thornell and I am the stage manager for no one is coming to save us. Welcome to my blog post about my week in Edinburgh that has been filled with show hopping, trying Scottish foods, and spending time with family!
Let’s start off strong with the types of shows we are seeing! Averaging about every other day, the company has a show planned to see together (other than doing our own show everyday). Some shows that we have seen together are Stumped, a new modern opera about deforestation, History of Paper, a tear-jerking musical, and a show called the Edinburgh Military Tattoo, which celebrates cultures from all over the world! Each of these shows were very different from one another and all have impacted how I view theatre today. I have also been show hopping with friends all around the Pleasance (we get free tickets to their shows with our ID cards)! I have seen a numerous number of HILARIOUS stand-up comedians! My family and I show hopped starting with the brilliant Pepperdine Scotland show no one is coming to save us, then going to a commentary called It’s the economy, Stupid! We then had a lunch break before diving head first into not one but TWO improv shows: Murder, She Didn’t Write and Showstopper.
When choosing restaurants to eat at, my family and I seek out Scottish food. We have been very successful in this journey. I have eaten a range of food from freshly made brownies to meat pies. I have even tried some fun food combos like haggis on pizza! In addition to the wide variety of local pubs and cafes, there are also tons of outdoor food vendors. One of my families and my favorite food is crepes!!! We get a few savory and a few sweet ones to share. Another fun family activity we enjoyed was having afternoon tea at Edinburgh Castle! 10/10 recommend!
In addition to all of our play watching and eating delicious food, we have also been good tourists by checking out museums. One of our top favorites is Camera Obscura, an illusion museum that is sure to make you laugh and it might even just give you a little scare as well! Pictured above is a picture of my younger brother, Nathaniel, who is definitely taller than me, except for in the picture… The National Museum of Scotland is another must see museum! It is full of amazing history and artifacts about Scotland as well having fun interactive portions in the museum about some past and present technology developments. Last but not least, touring Edinburgh Castle is a must! We saw the royal jewels and wow did it shine bright!
It is hard for us to imagine Edinburgh not during the fringe season. I asked my family members what their favorite parts of Edinburgh are and they all said that they loved seeing so many shows in just one day! As we walked from theatre to theatre, we would see our own show poster around the town which was always so exciting!! I loved having my family with me in Edinburgh! We all enjoyed seeing unique shows at the fringe together. My family especially loved the show I was a part of! I am so excited for this upcoming show week!
