Final Destination: Edinburgh Here We Come! – Joshua Rogers

My first week in Edinburgh was full of exploring! The first night we arrived, I wasn’t sure what to do as I obviously wasn’t familiar with the environment. So I decided to go on a wee walk, just me, myself, and I. Right off the bat I felt in complete and utter awe of the beauty of the city. Edinburgh gave off this vibe that I was very drawn to, that Glasgow didn’t quite have for me. Not to say Glasgow wasn’t beautiful, but Edinburgh was very appealing to me. The highlands of Scotland were my personal favorite. They reminded me of my grandmother’s house in the mountains of Boone, North Carolina. Edinburgh and Glenelg were so similar in this way in that they were so inviting, but in completely different ways.

We took a train from Glasgow central station to Edinburgh. I listened to music and went over my script a little bit in preparation for the opening preview of our show at the Fringe the following Wednesday. Luckily, we had that night off as well as that Sunday to settle in and prepare for the week. A group of us hiked up to Arthurs Seat to start the day off, and let me tell you, that view was incredibly beautiful! Later we grabbed some much needed lunch, then we found this little bookstore that was so cool! It is quite easy for me to lose track of time in a bookstore, and this one was no exception! There was a film section that caught my eye immediately. I discovered a section with plays, and I managed to narrow it down to 2 that I purchased. I said to a good friend that it was the happiest day I had in Scotland.

Then on monday we finally got to set foot in the space we had highly anticipated since March for our tech. We had only 3 hours to tech the entire show, but our company handled it well. I was able to walk around the pleasance courtyard venue and get familiar with the area as well. Once our opening preview came, it became surreal to me at that moment that I and my fellow company members were doing a show at the fringe!

The transition from Glasgow to Edinburgh was actually quite smooth. We had been in Glasgow for a month, and I was ready to get to Edinburgh and to start the run of the show. One of the main differences between these two places I noticed immediately was the welcoming of tourism in Edinburgh that Glasgow didn’t necessarily have. The atmosphere of the city was so welcoming and exhilarating!
