A Month in Glasgow – Nathan Skenderian

Glasgow is filled with many different elements that make the city unique. Walking through the city is always exciting as you never know what is going to happen, who you’re going to meet, and the things you are going to see. The architecture and energy within the city all comes together so well to make Glasgow the perfect place to spend a month to rehearse our show.

Starting off early in our time in Glasgow I had begun to really enjoy and appreciate the city we were in during our walks to class every morning. Learning about Scotland’s theatre culture in our classes every monday through thursday was perfectly paired with both experiencing the art all around Glasgow and working on a piece of our own in the city. Everywhere we went there were different forms of artwork but it was so fun to see all of the different posters for theatre pieces that were spread out across the city. Knowing that we were in such a welcoming and supportive community of theatre was one of my favorite parts about being in the city.

Another one of my favorite experiences was getting to see the performance of Mumbelina at Òran Mór. It was put on by “A play, a pie, and a pint.” The play was full of energetic and ironic humor that was such an enjoyable piece of theatre to watch. It played with parody, satire, and heavy audience interaction to put on a show with laughs all the way throughout. It was so nice to watch actors take the stage for a performance and be able to visibly see that they were having a lot of fun and enjoying themselves while performing. It was a completely different theatre experience and environment that I am not used to and it was so neat to see how far the spectrum of theatre can vary. Seeing that spectrum and how far it goes is something very common in Glasgow that I am very appreciative for.

One of my favorite things about being in a new country is enjoying all the different kinds of foods they have. One day after rehearsal, some of us got Korean food at a spot right by the royal conservatoire. I got the chicken katsu curry with some fried chicken wings and it was so good. I’ve also really loved the €3 tesco meal deals. They come with a sandwich, drink, and a side and it’s been a life saver for me right before rehearsal and they’re pretty good quality too. Me and my friend Isabelle also sometimes split a pizza in between class and rehearsal and the pizza here in Glasgow is awesome.

In retrospection, Glasgow was a beautiful city that was filled with so much art and life. Immersing ourselves in the city to work on a theatre piece as a company has been so beneficial to our education in theatre and understanding the purpose of theatre in a society. Our knowledge and awareness of theatre as an art piece has been so expanded by the city we have been rehearsing in and for that purpose I will always appreciate and love this city. There is so much to offer for artists of all kinds and endless things to experience. I will always hold a special place for this city in my heart.
